Watercolors by Julie Shotton
Reception: Sunday, November 16, 2008 from 1:00 - 4:00pm
November 16, 2008 - January 24, 2009
Julie Shotton paints intricate still-life arrangements with a strong emphasis on graphic organization of space. Even though her paintings are realistic, she is less concerned with a studied depiction of texture and space than with the arrangement of forms and relationship of objects. She challenges the viewer’s perception of the use and meaning of objects by placing them in unexpected combinations: The starkness of a broken antler with the lushness of peonies and mannerist art, an Egyptian bas relief placed on a totally western floral fabric, and a drawing by Michelangelo paired with sterile anatomical photographs. A Flemish painting of the deposition surrounded by mass produced Christmas ornaments. She is interested in realism to the degree of capturing a certain sparkle of light, sheen of color, difference in texture, and delight in detail, but not to the extent of hiding the medium. Wanting to be convincing enough for the viewer to easily recognize the “realness” of the objects, at the same time as realizing that it is all an illusion of value, color and line. She keeps an emphasis on relationships and design that is not as obvious as an abstractonist, nor as hidden as an Old Master, but definitely influenced by both.
