The Wichita Center for the Arts – Irene Vickers Baker Theatre is excited to announce its 2009-2010 Theatre Season. John Boldenow, Director of the Irene Vickers Baker Theatre, and The Board of Directors have chosen to produce a season of plays exclusively by Kansas playwrights. All but one will be attending performances of their work at The Center (William Inge died in 1973). These shows will make you proud to live in Kansas!

PICNIC by William Inge
April 21-24, 2010 at 8:00 p.m., April 25, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
The waning days of summer should give way to the promise of autumn and a fresh new start. But it’s 1953 in this small Kansas town and options are few. This is especially true for the stunningly beautiful Madge and her independent younger sister, Millie, who yearn for more than the life of staid domesticity that awaits them. Enter Hal, a dangerously handsome drifter, who comes along and sets the whole town a-flutter. Hal and Madge strike instant sparks, but can she really reject all she’s been taught to want in exchange for unreliable hopes and a pounding heart? In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Kansas playwright William Inge depicts the pleasure—and the pain—of risking everything to choose your own path. There will also be a special school performance of this production where tickets will be $5 per student. Contact John Boldenow at (316) 634-2787 ext. 217 for questions or reservations for the school show only.

The Wichita Center for the Arts is pleased to announce its Winter/Spring 2010 Class Schedule.

This diverse selection of art classes and workshops for preschoolers, children, teens, and adults will include all of the popular favorites that have become a Center tradition, including: drawing, painting, pottery, jewelry making, enameling, and sculpture.

A variety of new classes and new twists on long-running classes will help students expand their creativity and learn new techniques.

New classes for children and teens include:

All About Art (Ages 3-7) – This class will introduce the young child to different art media, styles, techniques and the language of art;

Sculptures and Assemblage (Ages 7-11) – In this class, students will learn how to create 3-D art using wood, metal, recycled objects, and other materials;

Artist’s Sketchbook with Mixed Materials (Ages 8-16) – This class will inspire a new perspective on making art through use of a sketchbook and various other materials;

High School Open Studio – Materials are available for your use and an instructor will be present during this all-media class which is open to individual projects.

New classes for teens and adults include:

The Art of Still-Life – Set up and paint a still-life in this all-media class;

Artist’s Journal (Ages 12-Adult) – The goal for this class is to become comfortable creating work that communicates one’s personal perspective. This will be accomplished through the uses of mixed media and the study of other artists who draw inspiration from their own lives and experiences;

Evening Adult Sculpture – This class will cover modeling the human figure in clay. Mold making, casting, and an art history lesson will also be included;

Impressionistic Style: Pastel and Oil – Students in this class will learn to paint still-life arrangements or photo landscapes in the impressionistic style;

Landscapes into Art: All Media – Explore both traditional and modern approaches toward color and composition, perspective, the role of illusion and content in landscapes, and working in a creative atmosphere and space in this exploration of drawing and painting landscapes;

Modern Traditions in Oil Painting – In this course, students will develop their oil painting skills in the representational or abstract style of their choice but with an emphasis on method and technique;

Painting on Nature – We need look no further than the world around us for inspiration: nature is both the subject and the medium in this class;

Unique Materials – In this mixed media course using found items and more, students will learn about the history of the materials before being challenged to use them in new and unexpected ways;

Visual Poetry – This class will explore two new ways of creating: First, students will learn about text as image and discover the influence of poets on art history and contemporary text artists. Next, students will discover the use of metaphor in poetry and literature as inspiration for new pieces of work.

The Center will be offering two exciting painting workshops:

David Vollbracht’s Photographs as a Guide to Enhance your Paintings – This class will emphasize the use of photography as a point of reference rather than as a crutch. Students will learn to develop a composition for photographs that maintains the original emotion and color of the real-life image;

Doug Dawson’s Pastel Landscape Workshop – Dawson will give morning demonstrations using a photo reference or outdoor location as a foundation for talking about lighting conditions in landscapes and color solutions. Students will then work on their own paintings and conclude the day with a critique and summary of the principles learned.

The Center will also offer four fun cooking workshops:

Brian Shilling’s Homemade Soups Made Easy – In this class, students will learn to make three delicious soups: a hearty ham and bean soup, a vegetarian sweet potato lime chili, and a loaded potato bacon soup. Soup tasting included;

Brian Shilling’s All Kinds of Chili – In this hands-on class, students will make beef chili, Mexican chili, and chicken chili, with a tasting to follow;

Brian Shilling’s Party Appetizers – Stuffed mushrooms, brie with balsamic cherry sauce, and croquette sandwiches are on the menu for this class which will conclude with a tasting that’s sure to inspire an evening of entertaining;

Brian Shilling’s Spanish Tapas -  Make and taste a variety of popular Spanish dishes from gambas al ajillo-garlic shrimp, to patats brabas-roasted potatoes with Tabasco and tortilla Espanola-Spanish omelet.
