'Through Our Eyes' exhibit by Envision artists

CityArts and Envision are co-presenting "Through Our Eyes," an exhibit of works created by individuals who are visually impaired. The pieces will be on display Sept. 28-Oct. 29 in the Main Hall (adjacent to CityArts' first floor Main Gallery). The public is invited to meet the artists and learn more about visual impairment during an opening reception from 5:30-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 at CityArts.

Envision is a local agency whose mission is to enhance the personal independence of people who are blind or low vision through vision rehabilitation, employment and public education. As part of its services, Envision offers an art program for youth and adults. The artwork included in the exhibit was created through this program.

Visitors will be astounded by the quality of work. There will be a variety of media represented, including tactile paintings, sculpture and ceramics. The goal is to show that, just because a person may not have physical vision, it doesn’t mean that he or she can't bring their creative vision to life.

"This is a very powerful collection of work that proves it's still possible to have a voice and be a true artist even without one of your senses," said CityArts Assistant Creative Director Marilee Mitchell.

One of the ways Envision helps youth and adults become artists is through the use of innovative technology. Inside Envision's art classroom is a machine that can turn pictures into braille. The artists are then able to trace their fingers over the braille pictures to learn forms.

For more information about the show, contact Marilee at (316) 350-3242 or e-mail mamitchell@wichita.gov.

Reading by writer/artist Harley Elliott
7 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 18
CityArts Boardroom

Harley Elliott is considered to be one of the most influential poet and writer in the Kansas/Great Plains-area. He has published 20 books and seldom reads or performs outside of Salina, KS (his hometown). His poems reflect a strong connection to the land and open sky of Kansas.

CityArts Artistic Director David Murano has attended readings by Elliott in the past. Elliott is very respected in writing circles and, according to Murano, "has put a spotlight on kansas within the national writing community."

Murano approached Elliott to come to Wichita so people in this area can become more familiar with his work. His appearance is also part of CityArts' efforts to expand its visual arts focus into the humanities through an ongoing Art Talk Lecture Series. (Watch videos of previous lectures: Richard Crowson, political cartooning |  Ron Michael, "Birger Sandzen.")

"I am constantly intrigued by the honesty, candor and imagination in his poetry," Murano said. "He has a language that everyone can understand -- from the intellectuals to old-time farmers."

Much of Elliott's poetry is based on actual events and experiences he has had in Kansas with family, friends and acquaintances.

"He tells these stories using imaginative and artistic license," Murano said.

CityArts is honored to have him present his work and speak about his highly respected career. A question and answer session will follow his reading.

CityArts Expands Programming
New summer classes focus on nontraditional arts

CityArts has added 21 new art classes to its summer session to capitalize on the growing popularity of nontraditional arts within the community. The additional offerings, which range from “Digital Scrapbooking” to “Acoustic Jamming 101” to “Stone Carving,” will enhance the center’s established classes in the traditional arts – fiber painting, drawing, pottery. CityArts’ summer session begins June 6 and runs through Aug. 13.

Registration for youth classes and summer camps is going on now; adult registration begins May 13. Anyone over age 16 may take an adult class. People may sign up in person at CityArts, 334 N. Mead, over the phone at (316) 462-2787 or online here.

"We added classes based on input we received from current students and people throughout the community who wanted us to keep current with art trends,” said Kay Blair, CityArts executive director. “We’re expecting it to be a very busy summer at CityArts and are looking forward to welcoming people of all ages through our doors.”

Also of note this summer at CityArts:

• A total of 14 different weeklong art camps will be offered June 13-Aug. 5. They are divided into morning and afternoon sessions and are for kids ages 6-16. CityArts partnered with Music Theatre for Young People (MTYP) to create a new camp July 25-29 that turns campers into documentary filmmakers and photographers as they go behind the scenes of MTYP’s “Aladdin Jr.” at Century II.

• Classes will be taught by well-known Wichita Eagle political cartoonist Richard Crowson. He will be leading adults in musical jam sessions with string instruments (“Acoustic Jamming 101”) and creating a new generation of cartoonists (“Kids Cartoon-A-Rama” and “Teen Toonists”). All three classes start the first week of June and are nine and 10 weeks, respectively.

• There will be 11 one-day photography workshops that start with the basics and lead students step-by-step through camera functions. Taken in sequence throughout the entire summer session, these workshops can turn anyone into an expert. Register for one or more depending on your interests.

•  “Recycled Art” is a fiber class that starts June 6 and targets those who are or want to become more environmentally aware. Students will explore alternative ways of making art out of everyday trash.
