Blank Verse
An open forum for poetic lyrical melodic hilarious or otherwise to get in front of an audience and exchange their ideas, views and thoughts.
Who:  Poets, thespians, comedians, musicians, spectators, those with aspirations or interest.

What:  Blank Verse offers a venue, of common and uncommon minds, for expression of verbal and visual arts.  Bring poetry and prose, music, comedy and thought to share with others, or just come and enjoy an the evening.  "Young poets, write as you will in whatever style you like, too much blood has run under the bridge to go on believing that only one road is right. In poetry everything is permitted with only this condition of course, you have to improve the blank page."- Nicaor Parra

When:  Every Wednesday night from 7-10.

Blank Page might best be described as a meeting of the minds, with the expressed purpose of providing an open forum for all media, performance included. It is a dream given a home; a fantasy being realized through the acts, ideas, and time of a motivated network of creative individuals; a gallery with the soul of a community center, providing a youth-friendly open forum for all static and dynamic arts that encourages experimentation and learning.   Here the opportunity is given to get one's work up on the walls, get feed back, and come back again to see the possibilities of self-expression through the work of others. Blank Page is on a mission to create an open dialogue between artists who are established, those who are outsiders, and those who aren't sure where they stand. Currently Blank Page has in residence painters, writers, photographers, drawers, mixed media artists, musicians, and comedians.

"Salon des Refusés"
Dates: May 15 - 31, 2008
At the COMMERCE Gallery (at the Go Away Garage) and the REDLINE Gallery (at Lawrence Photo)
Web:
www.artswichita.org/salon
Email: salon@artswichita.org
This is an open call to all nominated artists who were rejected for the upcoming River City Biennale (RCB), and all those who should have been nominated to participate.

We would like your response of INTEREST by email by March 15, 2008, so please respond right away. The deadline for your COMMITMENT is March 31, 2008. Also, if you know someone who should be nominated for the Salon please respond with the artist's name and e-mail address so that we can contact them. See the Salon website at www.artswichita.org/salon for a current list of invitees.

Artists are asked to submit 2-6 pieces of work (works will be split between the two galleries by choice of the organizing committee members). Please only submit work from the last two years which reflects your best efforts. If you are interested in doing an installation, please propose your idea to the organizing committee at the time of your commitment so that we can ensure there is room for your work. Since this is not a juried show, you do not need to submit slides or other photos for acceptance.

The exhibit will be held simultaneously at the COMMERCE Gallery and Redline Gallery (at Lawrence Photo) during the weeks of May 15-31, 2008. These dates (according to sources) will be during the same time frame as the RCB itself, allowing the Salon to open a larger dialog about influential artists in the Wichita area.

"Salon des Refusés" shows have historically presented the "rejects" from juried exhibits. Often these shows take place with the blessing and support of the curators and jury members, and are meant to highlight the difficulty of the jury process, and to showcase the work of the artists who "almost made the cut."  In the case of the RCB, all of the artists had to be nominated for inclusion in the process, reflecting the high caliber of their work. This Salon des Refusés will show the Wichita viewing public the wide variety of work that was considered for the RCB.

Artists will receive further communiqué regarding drop-off/pick-up arrangements in future e-mails/phone calls.

It is anticipated that the Biennale will increase the opportunities for Wichita artists to be included in major regional, national, and international exhibitions. The exhibitions will be hosted by several venues and will include panel discussions and distinguished speakers on topics related to contemporary art. For the first time in Wichita, a concerted effort will be made to connect what's going on here with what's going on elsewhere, and artists in Wichita will have the opportunity to present their work to a serious, informed audience of art professionals, critics and collectors.

Each artist chosen for the exhibit went through the same rigorous process of selection - first, an anonymous online review, then, after deliberation by the curator, studio visits. The entire process utilized the internet in unconventional ways by creating an online community for the artists and curator through blogs and communication groups.

“A Multi-Media Display of Nature, Animals, and Landmarks” by Tom "Gateway" Gdisi, Photographer
Friday, April 25 – May 27, 2008
Reception: Final Friday, April 25, 6:30 – 9:00pm
Tom wants to share his joy of discovering nature and beauty around us.
Since he was a child, he enjoyed taking pictures at family events.
His early career as a news videographer, challenged him to look for the most interesting shots of the story subject he could find.
Tom loves the excitement of uploading and printing the photos to see what he caught with his camera. He especially like animals and nature, because they are taken for granted most of the time. He hopes to convey a little of the same joy and excitement he felt while photographing.

PASTEL NATIONAL 2008 EXHIBIT TO OPEN
Nationally juried exhibition of pastel art on view March 14 – May 18, 2008

February 22, 2008—Pastel National 2008, a nationally juried exhibition highlighting the art of pastel on paper, opens March 14 and will remain on display through May 18, 2008 at The Wichita Center for the Arts.
The exhibit showcases approximately 80 bold and beautiful pastel works of art, and encompasses a wide variety of subject matter and techniques — from the more traditional approaches to avant-garde exploration of the medium. The next Pastel National Exhibition will be in the spring of 2010.

The public is invited to attend a free opening reception at the Center — located at 9112 E. Central — from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2008. The opening will be held in conjunction with the Center’s annual meeting reception and the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award presentation. Pastel National 2008 has been generously underwritten by the Fred C. & Mary R. Koch Foundation.
