History of CityArts
CityArts’ mission is to provide education, information and artistic opportunities to the community. It was formally established by the City of Wichita in 1998 to provide a complete arts experience to citizens and encourage lifelong learning.
CityArts offers art education, gallery exhibition space, cultural entertainment and is an advocate for the Wichita arts community as a whole. Programs and experiences are meant to stimulate the eye, mind and spirit. Its current location in the bustling Old Town Square district has played a large role in increasing its visibility within the community. CityArts relocated to a three-story building in 2004 that was designed specifically to meets the needs of an arts center.
Admission is free to any one of CityArts’ three exhibition galleries that feature original works in a variety of media by local and regional artists. The majority of the works on display at CityArts are for sale to the general public, and the public also has the opportunity to purchase locally made art in CityArts’ gift shop. Each month, CityArts hosts the Final Friday Gallery Crawl and First Friday Music Crawl.
With such a wide variety of available space and its thought-inspiring atmosphere, CityArts has also become a highly sought-after location for private and community events. All in all, to determine CityArts’ importance to Wichita, one only has to look at the downtown contemporary art scene today.
The City has a long history of supporting and offering art initiatives in the community, but it wasn’t until the formation of CityArts that the idea of creating a “cultural center in Wichita” really began to flourish.
CityArts continues to show a leadership role in the arts community by supporting local artists and tailoring its class programming to fit the public’s interests and needs.
